Houston grew up in Trochu, Alberta working with his father at the farm equipment dealership, Trochu Motors Ltd. In 2014, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Calgary and then worked in the Ottawa office of Alberta Senator Doug Black, focusing on agricultural, energy and environmental issues.

After working in politics, Houston pursued a legal career. He received a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the University of Birmingham (UK) in 2019, and his Certificate of Qualification from the Federation of Law Societies of Canada in 2020. He then completed his articles with Colin G. Simmons at Counsel West Law, and he was called to the Alberta Bar in 2021. Houston formally joined Beaumont Church LLP in December 2022.

Houston enjoys volunteering and giving back to the community. He is a former board member of Alberta Young Speakers for Agriculture, a former Vice Chair of the Calgary Stampede’s Agriculture and Western Events Media Committee, and has been a sessional instructor teaching Agriculture Law at the University of Calgary.
