Houston grew up in the town of Trochu, Alberta working with his father at the farm equipment dealership, Trochu Motors Ltd. In 2014, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Calgary. After graduation, Houston worked in the Ottawa office of Alberta Senator Doug Black as a legislative assistant focusing on agricultural, energy and environmental issues.

After working in politics, Houston decided to pursue a legal career. He received his Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the University of Birmingham (UK) in 2019, and his Certificate of Qualification from the Federation of Law Societies Canada in 2020. He then completed his articles with Colin G. Simmons at Counsel West Law, and he was called to the Alberta Bar in 2021. Houston formally joined Beaumont Church LLP in December 2022.

Houston enjoys volunteering and giving back to the community. He is currently the Treasurer of Alberta Young Speakers for Agriculture and is a member and sub-committee co-chair of the Calgary Stampede’s Agriculture and Western Events Media Committee.
